“Als iedereen zich kan verdedigen, heb je een andere wedstrijd”

De vechtschool is z’n droom. Het geld dat hij verdiende met zijn sport, gebruikt hij om zijn keuzes te maken. Hij heeft wellicht de enige vechtschool in Nederland met een geldautomaat van de ABN-AMRO aan de gevel en een makelaar als buurman, midden in een dorp. Sem Schilt’s Fightgame Academy is bedoeld voor iedereen, toegankelijk en midden in de samenleving. Vechtsport is anders dan andere sporten, want “het contact dat je maakt, is echt.”

Z’n erelijst met titels in het zwaargewicht kickboksen is indrukwekkend, z’n lengte van 2 meter 12 ook. De wereld lag aan z’n voeten, volle zalen keken met tienduizenden naar z’n prestaties, kennen hem als de man met zo’n voornaam die je zo lekker langgerekt voor de wedstrijd kunt aankondigen…Semmyyyyyyyy Schilt!

Luisteren naar Sem Schilt aan de grote tafel in Zuidlaren is evenwel indrukwekkender. Z’n ontvangst is hartelijk en open, de kennismaking goed. Zo imposant z’n handdruk en verschijning, zo krachtig blijken in de loop van ons gesprek z’n woorden.

“Je krijgt wat je geeft”

Vechtsport als middel voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Mooie en op het eerste gehoor misschien prikkelende uitspraken schuwt hij niet: “Niet- vechtsporters zijn de pesters.” Het verschil? Het contact met de ander, je kan een ander pijn doen, dat maakt het echt. Als je dat fysieke contact leert aangaan, leer je wat het betekent en met je doet. Vanuit dat gevoel, dat echte gevoel, ontstaat waardering en empathie voor de ander. Want jij weet als geen anders dat het contact je pijn kan doen en als jij niet wilt dat die ander jou pijn gaat doen, moet je hem dat niet aandoen. “Je krijgt wat je geeft.” Respect.

Schilt kwam twintig jaar geleden van Rotterdam en geboorteplaats Capelle aan de IJssel naar Zuidlaren om er te trainen en heeft het dorp niet meer verlaten. In de relatieve rust van Noord Drenthe focuste hij op wat hij wilde, de beste worden in z’n sport. Niet minder dan dertien wereldtitels in verschillende disciplines zoals Karate, Freefight, Kickboksen rijker en een leven lang trainen, is hij de vleesgeworden docent en coach voor jong en oud. “Als je iets wilt bereiken, moet je oefenen, moet je er voor trainen. Ik leer mensen wat dat is, werken aan het laten slagen van je dromen, leren je doel te bereiken. Vechtsporten zijn bij uitstek geschikt voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Je moet het altijd zelf doen, maar ik kan je wel helpen de weg te vinden om jouw doel te bereiken. Vechtsport maakt je sterker, fysiek en mentaal, het vormt je karakter en het betekent leren keuzes te maken, leren wat de beste optie is, leren relativeren en leren omgaan met stress- situaties.”

“Vechten leer je hier niet” wel de vechtsport!

“Als je wilt leren vechten, moet je hier niet zijn.” Die eye- opener moet ik even laten indalen, want we zijn toch op een school voor vechtsport? “Vechtsporten, sporten dus, zegt het woord: je hebt kaders en regels waarbinnen je met elkaar om gaat. Net zoals de regels die ik hier voor iedereen op de muur heb hangen, de manier waarop we met elkaar om gaan. Als je je allemaal aan die regels houdt, kun je de sport met elkaar bedrijven, en kijken hoe je kunt winnen; degene die wint is het beste, maar heeft zich net als de ander aan de regels te houden. Vechten leer je op straat, daar zijn geen regels en dat is dus precies wat we hier wel hebben, regels waar we ons allemaal aan houden. Vechten met respect voor elkaar. Echt, als iedereen zich kan verdedigen, omdat je dat geleerd hebt en met de regels van de sport, dan heb je een heel andere wedstrijd en een heel andere wereld.”

Hij kijkt me aan, weegt z’n woorden en de impact. “Dat is waar het me om gaat, ik wil graag dat mensen zich leren verdedigen, leren incasseren, leren van zich af te bijten en voor zichzelf op te komen. Daar gebruik ik vechtsporten voor omdat ze er heel geschikt voor zijn, met alle regels en het respect voor elkaar dat er bij hoort. Zodat mensen leren zich te verdedigen en voor zichzelf op te komen, want een ander doet dat niet voor je.”

Nog een misverstand weg ruimen: zelfverdediging moet je niet verwarren met vechtsport. Zelfverdediging is oneerlijker, omdat je doet wat je op dat moment moet doen, er is geen regel, er staat geen maat op. Dat is een groot verschil met vechtsport; kom voor je zelf op, maar blijf binnen de grenzen. Zeker voor kinderen is dat ongelooflijk belangrijk om te leren: leer waarom je iets doet en aanvaard de consequenties als je over de grens gaat.”

Geen hogere wiskunde

“Met pesten is het hetzelfde: kinderen die leren vechten, pesten niet, want ze weten wat het betekent, ze kennen de consequenties en bovendien, ze leren empathie te krijgen voor de ander, ze leren omgaan met elkaar, af te tasten waar elkaars en je eigen grenzen liggen, ze leren de regels van de sport en die zijn gebaseerd op respect voor elkaar en voor je omgeving.” En niet te vergeten, zo lees ik op de muur als laatste van de vijf basisregels in het huis van Semmy Schilt: Ik ben aanspreekbaar op mijn gedrag.

Het vervolg van ons gesprek past dan ook in z’n visie hoe we omgaan met onszelf, met elkaar en onze omgeving. “De Academy en de transparante manier waarop we het hebben ingericht, de programma’s die we bieden, voor particulieren, maar ook met gemeenten en scholen, voor bedrijven, past in m’n streven naar saamhorigheid, het uitgaan van respect voor elkaar. Wat je krijgt, is wat je geeft zei ik net al: kijk eerst naar jezelf, wat jij geeft die ander? Hoe je dat doet, moet je leren aanvoelen, zonder praten en dat is wat we mensen leren. We leren vechten, want dat is het leven – zelfs ademhalen is vechten – leren bereiken wat je wilt. Wat wel en niet mag binnen de regels, leer je ook. Dat heb ik mijn hele carrière gedaan, vooral heel goed de regels bestudeerd, ik wist heel goed wat nog net wel en vooral ook net niet meer mocht en ik zocht continue de grenzen op…”

Leren relativeren, leren omgaan met onrecht en oneerlijk gedrag, “want het leven is oneerlijk. Je wilt toch in de spiegel blijven kijken?”, vraagt Sem Schilt me. “Het is allemaal geen hogere wiskunde, het is heel basaal. Gewoon opkomen voor jezelf en leren consequenties te aanvaarden. Ik wil het juiste doen met wat ik heb geleerd.” Wat Sem Schilt betreft, past voor jezelf opkomen in een gezonde en bewuste levensstijl, een gezond lichaam en dito geest. Dat gaat misschien niet vanzelf, nee, daar moet je voor oefenen. En dat maakt een gezonde levensstijl zo echt en tastbaar, net als jezelf en de wereld om je heen.

1. USE OF PERSONAL DATA

(a) you enter into an agreement with Fight Game Academy;

(c) confirm and inform about the trial lesson;
(d) communicate in appropriate language;
(e) enter into and perform the agreements;
(f) maintaining membership records;
(g) social media;
(i) enforcing disciplinary law;
(j) carrying out other activities customary for a gym;
(k) preparing, sending and collecting invoices, registration fees and/or tuition fees.

1.4. The reason why Fight Game Academy may collect your personal data is that:
(a) the processing is necessary for the performance of an agreement to which you, as data subject, are a party.
(b) you, as data subject, have given your consent to the processing of your personal data for the purposes specified by Fight Game Academy.
(c) the processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation to which the controller is subject.
(d) the processing is necessary to pursue the legitimate interests of the controller or of a third party, except where such interests are overridden by the interests or fundamental rights and freedoms of the data subject which require protection of personal data, in particular where the data subject is under 18 years of age.
(e) you, as a visitor to www.fightgameacademy.nl, give your consent to that effect by agreeing to the privacy statement.

1.5. In addition, Fight Game Academy collects information about:
(a) your visit to the Fight Game Academy website. This initially concerns data your browser sends by default to every website you visit. Think of your ip-address.

On that basis, Fight Game Academy can then improve its website. It is therefore not about withholding personal data, but about tracking your actions on the website. In addition, to ensure your anonymity, Fight Game Academy has done the following:

3. RIGHTS IN RELATION TO YOUR PERSONAL DATA

3.1. The personal data collected from you by Fight Game Academy belongs to you personally. Therefore, you have the following rights:
(a) the right to withdraw your consent. You have the right to withdraw the consent you have given for being allowed to use your personal data. From that moment, Fight Game Academy may, without other grounds, no longer use your personal data. Until the moment you withdraw your consent, Fight Game Academy has been allowed to use your personal data.
(b) the right of inspection. At your request Fight Game Academy will inform you whether and what has happened to your personal data. Fight Game Academy will then provide you with information on the purposes for which your personal data have been used, what personal data have been used and who are or will be the recipients of your personal data. 3.2. To make sure that the request is made by you, Fight Game Academy asks you to send a copy of your ID with the request. In this copy, black out your passport photo, MRZ (machine readable zone, the strip of numbers at the bottom of the passport), passport number and Citizen Service Number (BSN). This is to protect your privacy. Fight Game Academy will respond to your request as soon as possible, but at the latest within four weeks.

4. PRIVACY POLICY OF OTHER WEBSITES

4.1. www.fightgameacademy.nl contains links to other websites. However, Fight Game Academy is not responsible for the privacy practices of these websites if they do not belong to Fight Game Academy itself. For more information on this, Fight Game Academy refers you to the relevant websites.

5.1. Fight Game Academy will not provide your data to third parties, unless you have given your explicit consent or Fight Game Academy is obliged to do so by law or court order.

5.2. If Fight Game Academy uses a party that processes your personal data for Fight Game Academy, for example a party for the collection of overdue payments, Fight Game Academy concludes a processing agreement with this party.

5.3. Parties outside the European Union with which Fight Game Academy cooperates are required to treat your personal data similar to the General Data Protection Regulation. Consider the EU-US Privacy Shield (Privacy Shield). EU-US Privacy Shield is an agreement on the protection of personal data of European Union citizens processed in the United States.

6. PERSONAL DATA OF WEBSITE VISITORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE

6.1. The Fight Game Academy website and/or service does not intend to collect data on website visitors who are under 18 years of age, unless they have parental or guardian consent. However, Fight Game Academy cannot verify whether a visitor is over 18 years of age. Fight Game Academy therefore advises parents to be involved in the online activities of their children in order to prevent the collection of data about children without parental permission. If you are convinced that Fight Game Academy has collected personal data about a minor without such consent, please contact Fight Game Academy. Then Fight Game Academy will delete this information.

7. SECURING PERSONAL DATA

8. NOTIFICATION PERSONAL DATA AUTHORITY

8.1. If, despite the security measures taken by Fight Game Academy, an unexpected security breach occurs, and that breach leads to (the likelihood of) significantly serious adverse effects on the protection of your personal data, the Personal Data Authority will be notified.

9. NOTIFICATION TO DATA SUBJECT

9.1. You will be notified of any breach of security of Fight Game Academy if the breach is likely to adversely affect your privacy.

10. RETENTION PERIOD PERSONAL DATA

10.1. Fight Game Academy will not keep your personal data longer than strictly necessary to realise the purposes for which your data is collected or required by law.

10.2 If you have an agreement with Fight Game Academy, Fight Game Academy will keep your data at least for the duration of the agreement and the duration of the fiscal retention obligation determined by law.
